Oh it’s been hard, hard, hard to sit down and write something. I’ve definitely been missing my Post-a-Week goal, so yeah, lots of catch-up posts to do. The most effective way so far has been to feature movie trailers, so guess what this post is about. But okay, just so I don’t waste your time clicking all the way here just to hear what I have to say about one crummy trailer, how’s five sound? Here’s a list of movies I’ve been keeping tabs on via movies news, teasers trailers, and what not that I think are going to be at least halfway decent. Like I mentioned earlier, 2010 was a bad movie year for me, and so far things aren’t really looking up early this year either (e.g., The Green Hornet) though to be fair, I haven’t watched True Grit and The Fighter yet. So here’s a list of what’s giving me good vibes thus far.
I’ve had my hopes up for Thor ever since I learned they picked Chris Hemsworth for the role. There’s just something about the guy that I like despite his small role in A Perfect Getaway and even smaller role in Star Trek. I think he’s got the charisma and screen presence for a leading role, and I hope Thor will be his big break. The first trailer looked okay, but check out the latest trailer. Very promising indeed.
I didn’t really pay much attention to this one as I’m really not an X-Men fan. But I liked Matthew Vaughn’s Stardust and Kick-Ass (to a slightly lesser extent), and James McAvoy as the young Professor X gets a big thumbs up from me. The X-Men: First Class trailer popped up not too long ago, and it looks competent at the very least. I think X2 is way overrated and X-Men: The Last Stand is definitely maligned by fanboys. Hope this one gives the franchise a much-needed shot in the arm.
Ah yes, the Captain America movie. Those who know me well enough or have been visiting this blog will know I’ve been keeping tabs on Captain America:The First Avenger one for a long time. I’m happy on all counts – Joe Johnston as director and Chris Evans as Steve Rogers – and the teaser (finally!) bodes fairly well. If Johnston can pull the same magic he did with The Rocketeer (not The Wolfman), we’re in for a treat.
For me, Justin Lin’s The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift is the best in the series. (I didn’t bother watching the second or fourth installments). Although it seems Lin stumbled in the fourth film, Fast Five seems very, very promising. I don’t care if it’s loud and shallow; just as long as it entertains and doesn’t waste too much time trying to grow a brain. This is The Fast and the Furious series we’re talking about, yes?
It’s a toss up between Rango and Rio for me, so I’m including them both. The Rango teaser lost me, its first trailer hooked me, and then the subsequent trailer and Big Bowl spot kinda lost me again. So I’m not sure. It looks like it’s got a lot more scope than Rio where adult viewers are concerned, plus it’s got Johnny Depp. But who knows? Depp can’t save everything; remember The Tourist? Rio on the other hand seems like a surer bet, even if it looks like it’s largely catering to kids. I like Ice Age 3, though the first one was better. I know Pixar has Cars 2 lined up this year, but Cars seriously felt like Pixar on auto-pilot, so I’m not including Cars 2 even though I’ll probably watch it
Okay, gotta get some sleep and wake up to a brand new day with my son, whom I only get for the weekends. And yes, I’ll make an effort to blog more regularly. Over and out.
