Sherlock Holmes (2009): Trailer 3

I didn’t think it possible, but Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes is actually looking more and more fun. While I don’t doubt Robert Downey Jr.’s ability to carry the film all by himself, I wasn’t too sure about Jude Law and even the usually infallible Rachel McAdams. Law is pretty acceptable when not starring in a moving picture (e.g., doing print ads for Dunhill) but as a leading man he’s not very charismatic and is liable to cut a movie off at the ankles. And McAdams looked like she didn’t fit in anywhere.

However, this trailer offers significantly more verbal exchanges between Watson and Holmes, and even McAdams’s character feels less like a novelty now. Also, I really liked Mark Strong’s perf in RocknRolla, and I hope Ritchie’s given him more screentime this time around. Overall, Sherlock Holmes looks like more of blast than before.

Trailer: Sherlock Holmes (2009)

Seriously, I didn’t and still don’t quite know what to make of Guy Ritchie’s upcoming Sherlock Holmes. We’ve all (or most of us anyway) seen the photo of Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes, bleeding, grimy, and shirtless, which suggests an interesting take on the character, but given Ritchie’s track record—he seems to have fizzled out after the flash of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch—it’s really hard to know what to expect, especially with a period piece on the famous detective. And given the fact that there aren’t many successful Sherlock Holmes movies (right off the top of my head, I’d say Young Sherlock Holmes and Zero Effect, which arguably isn’t really a Sherlock Holmes movie at all), Ritchie’s chances of pulling this one off are slimmer than usual.

But I’m not writing this one off yet. Click on the picture above, take a look at the first trailer for the movie, and see what you make of it. Mr. ex-Madonna may actually come up with something that’s naughty and nice this Christmas.
